Two Tigers Post Double Doubles in JSU's Win Over FAMU

JACKSON, Miss.| Ti'lan Boler, Daphane White and Daja Woodard each pulled down double-digit rebounds to help lead Jackson State past the Florida A&M, 72-51 at home Monday evening.

The Tigers had three players score in double figures, led by Jariyah Covington, who had 18 points. Boler tacked on a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds and White chipped in as well with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Led by White's seven offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 24 boards that resulted in 23 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 18 Florida A&M turnovers while committing 16. Those takeaways turned into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Liz Martino led the way individually for the Tigers with three steals.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (9-8, 6-1 SWAC) started scoring by going on a 13-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Covington, to take an early lead with 6:04 left in the first quarter.
  • The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter-break with a 19-9 advantage.
  • Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.
  • Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 14-0 run starting at the 8:29 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Ti'Ian Boler, to increase its lead to 33-11.
  • Florida A&M (3-16, 1-6 SWAC) cut into that lead, but the JSU still enjoyed a 38-18 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
  • JSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Martino, to expand its lead further to 45-28 with 6:17 to go in the third.
  • Before the third period was over, the Tigers added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 53-34 edge.
  • Jackson State scored eight of its 15 points in the paint.
  • The Tigers started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 58-34 with 8:30 to go in the contest.
  • The Rattlers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the JSU still cruised the rest of the way for the 72-51 win.
  • Jackson State took advantage of five Florida A&M turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
Game Notes
  • Jackson State finished with 42 points in the paint, 23 second chance points,  22 points off 18 FAMU turnovers, 15 bench points and nine fast break points
  • The Tigers shot 26-for-65 (40 percent) from the field and 17-for-26 (65.4 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Daphane White notched her third double-double in a row for JSU registering 14 points and 11 points.
  • The Tigers held FAMU to only 34.5 percent shooting from the field.
  • Jackson State had a 51-20 edge on the boards in the win.
  • The Tigers' defense forced 18 turnovers in the game.
  • Jackson State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 24 offensive boards in the game.
  • Jariyah Covington led the Lady Tigers with a game-high 18 points.
  • Three players reached double figures in rebounds for Jackson State. Boler grabbed 12 rebounds, Daphane White added 11, and Daja Woodard tacked on 11.
