GRAMBLING, La| The Jackson State women's basketball team held Grambling State to just 19 percent from beyond the arc in a 4-for-21 shooting performance on the way to a 67-52 victory over GSU on the road Saturday afternoon at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Jackson State had three players score in double figures, led by Angel Jackson, who secured a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ti'lan Boler tacked on 13 points and Daphane White chipped in as well with 10 points and six rebounds.
Daja Woodard pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 10 boards and turning them into 14 second chance points.
Jackson State's defense held Grambling State to only 19 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29 percent from the field.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (10-8, 7-1 SWAC) started off strong, putting together a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
- JSU did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 14 points close to the basket.
- Grambling State (5-14, 4-4 SWAC) fought back to tie the game at 19-19 before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 6:35 mark in the second period to take a 25-19 lead.
- GSU cut into that lead, but Jackson State still carried a 27-23 advantage into halftime.
- Jackson State surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 33-33 they went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jariyah Covington, to grab a 39-33 lead with 3:24 to go in the third.
- Before the third quarter was over, JSU added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 47-39 edge.
- Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Daphane White's layup, to grow the lead to 56-43 with 5:20 to go in the contest.
- Jackson State kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 67-52 win.
