JACKSON, MS --Coltie Young collected a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jackson State men's basketball team over the Alabama State Hornets 61-58 at home Saturday.
The Tigers (3-12, 2-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Young, who notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Jamarcus Jones tacked on 11 points and Zeke Cook added seven points and seven rebounds.
Jones pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Jackson State offense which grabbed 15 boards and turned them into 20 second chance points.
The Jackson State defense held Alabama State shooters to just 38.9 percent from the field, including 26.3 percent from three-point range. The Tigers also kept Antonio "TJ" Madlock to 3-of-14 shooting and seven points in the game.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 21-20 advantage, Jackson State went on a 5-0 run with 3:31 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Jones, to increase its lead to 26-20. The Tigers then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 31-28 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 16 of its 31 points close to the basket.
Alabama State proceeded to take a 43-41 lead before Jackson State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Young's jumper, to seize a 50-43 lead with 10:19 to go in the contest. The Hornets narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still held on for the 61-58 win. Jackson State made the most of six offensive rebounds to tack on 11 second chance points out of 30 total in the period.
