JSU Drops Hard Fought Battle at FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.| After falling behind 2-0, the Jackson State volleyball team won the third set but fell in a hard fought fourth set as Florida A&M claimed the 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon.

Alexis Williams led the Tigers' offense with 13 kills as she tacked on six digs and three aces. Karys Dove recorded 18 assists and two aces. Jordan Jones finished with eight kills and four blocks, while Trinity Bryant registered 11 digs and three assists in the match.

How It Happened

  • Jackson State (6-7, 2-1 SWAC) got on the board first in the set one with an attack error from FAMU.
  • Florida A&M (7-9,3-1 SWAC) scored the next three points, taking a 3-1 lead early in the first set.
  • JSU leaped to a 13-9 lead over the Rattlers, capped off by a kill from Hope Briggs.
  • FAMU knotted the score at 14, then never gave up the lead again as they sealed the first set 25-20.
  • The second set began with both teams going back and forth as the score was tied six times before FAMU took an 11-9 lead over JSU.
  • The Tigers trailed the rest of the set as Florida A&M took set two, 25-19.
  • Jackson State went on a 4-0 run to start the fourth set that featured two kills, an ace and a FAMU attack error.
  • JSU kept its distance from the lagging Rattlers as Karys Dove registered an ace to bring the score to 9-3.
  • The Rattlers closed in on the gap by tying the score at 13.
  • Jackson State continued to hit the gas and eventually secured the fourth set 25-16.
  • JSU was able to inch away for a 12-10 lead after playing neck and neck to open set four as Cierra Gilbert registered a kill.
  • The Tigers tied the score at 19, but Florida A&M went on a 4-0 run to give themselves the 23-19 lead.
  • Jackson State scored two more times, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Rattlers as FAMU handed JSU its first conference loss of the season.

Up Next 

The Tigers will travel to Pine Bluff, Ark. for three conference matchups in the SWAC West Cluster. JSU will face Alcorn State Sunday at 1:0 p.m. and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 7:00 p.m. Jackson State will close out the cluster against Grambling State Monday at 11:00 a.m.
