Jackson State Scores Big Off of Turnovers in Victory Over Tougaloo

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team scored 48 points off of turnovers on the way to a 105-47 victory over the Tougaloo Bulldogs at home Wednesday.

The Tigers (2-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Areyanna Hunter, who had 22 points and six steals. Miya Crump tacked on 12 points and six rebounds and Ti'lan Boler chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.

Jackson State out-rebounded Tougaloo 47-28 in Wednesday's game, paced by seven boards from Laila Walker. The Tigers also collected 24 offensive rebounds and scored 30 second chance points.

The Jackson State defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 39 Tougaloo turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 48 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hunter's six steals led the way individually for the Tigers.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 6-3 advantage, Jackson State went on a 27-0 run with 7:31 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Hunter, to increase its lead to 33-3, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 33 points close to the basket.

JSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 9:53 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Angel Jackson, to increase its lead to 41-3. The Tigers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 61-22 advantage heading into halftime. Jackson State dominated in the paint, scoring 24 of its 28 points close to the basket.

Jackson State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 12-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Hunter, to expand its lead further to 74-29 with 3:43 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Bulldogs had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 77-34 edge. Jackson State took advantage of nine Tougaloo turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of takeaways.

Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Ti'Lan Boler's layup, to grow the lead to 93-39 with 4:35 to go in the contest. The Tigers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 105-47 win. Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 22 of its 28 total points.
