Tigers Take Down Alabama State to Advance to Sunday's SWAC Championship Match

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas| The Jackson State volleyball team fought back after falling in the first set to secure a 3-1 victory (20-25, 29-27, 25-23, 25-18) over an undeated Alabama State Saturday to advance to the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Championship match.

Alexis Williams went off for a double-double with 17 kills and 20 digs in the Tigers' win.

Hope Briggs also added 15 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Trinity Bryant chipped in for with 18 digs to go with eight blocks from Kyahana Robinson.

How It Happened

  • The Tigers found themselves in an early deficit, dropping the first set 25-20.
  • Alabama State grabbed the advantage for good at 18-17 in a set that was tied up two times before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza.
  • Jackson State rallied from a first-set loss to take set two 29-27, evening the match at 1-1.
  • The Tigers came out on top of a close second set, winning in a stanza that was tied 13 times and had five lead changes. 
  • JSU racked up 19 kills over the course of the set.
  • Jackson State built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one.
  • The Tigers took the lead for good at 21-20 in a set that showcased two lead changes before Jackson State took over in the second half of the stanza.
  • They then carried that lead to a 25-23 set win.
  • Jackson State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking seven Alabama State attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 13 Alabama State attacking errors on the way to victory.
  • JSU closed out the match with a 25-18 fourth-set victory, winning their third set in a row.
  • The Tigers scored first and never trailed in the set to secure the victory.
  • Jackson State opened up as much as a nine point lead at 23-14 before closing out the stanza, totaling 16 kills along the way.
