Five Tigers Score in Double Figures, Reed Notches 100th Win in Tigers' Home Opener

JACKSON, Miss.| Jackson State held LeMoyne-Owen to only 15.8 percent shooting from the field and the Tigers knocked off the Magicians 113-39 at home Wednesday evening to open the season. Tigers head coach Tomekia Reed registered her 100th victory at Jackson State with tonight's win.

Jackson State (1-0) had five players score in double figures, led by Daphane White, who had 20 points. Ti'lan Boler added 16 points and five steals and Taylor Woodhouse helped out with 16 points off of the bench.

Jackson State out-rebounded LeMoyne-Owen 55-18 in Tuesday's game, led by 10 boards from Ja'Leah Hickmon. The Tigers also collected 19 offensive rebounds and scored 34 second chance points.

Jackson State's defense held LeMoyne-Owen to only 15.8 percent shooting from the field, including 15 percent from beyond the arc. The Magicians did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with seven offensive rebounds and managed six second chance points while Jackson State cleared 36 defensive rebounds.

How It Happened

  • After jumping out to an 11-7 advantage, Jackson State went on an 11-0 run with 4:03 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Hickmon, to increase its lead to 22-7, a score that would hold for the rest of the period.
  • Jackson State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
  • JSU built that first quarter lead to 31-15 before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 7:02 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Madison Roshelle, to increase its lead to 41-15.
  • The Tigers proceeded to tack on 10 points to that lead and enjoyed a 55-19 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State forced nine LeMoyne-Owen turnovers in the period and turned them into 17 points.
  • JSU continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 18-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Roshelle, to expand its lead further to 73-21 with 4:55 to go in the third.
  • Before the third period was over, the Tigers added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 84-29 edge.
  • Jackson State took advantage of eight LeMoyne-Owen turnovers in the quarter, scoring 12 points off of takeaways.
  • JSU kept widening that lead, expanding it to 91-30 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Roshelle's layup, to grow the lead to 101-30 with 4:59 to go in the contest.
  • The Tigers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 113-39 win.
  • Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 29 points in the paint.
