STARKVILLE, Miss.| Angel Jackson notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, but the Jackson State women's basketball team fell to Mississippi State 82-72 on the road Thursday.
In addition to Jackson's solid showing, the Tigers were led by Hayleigh Breland, who had 15 points and six assists, and by Taylor Woodhouse, who tacked on 12 points coming off the bench.
Led by Breland's two offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 13 second chance points.
Jackson State did a great job disrupting Mississippi State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Jackson's five rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (5-4) kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-17.
- Mississippi State (10-2) kept adding to that lead, building a 37-26 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Ti'Ian Boler, to narrow its deficit to 37-31.
- Mississippi State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Tigers trailing 44-33 heading into halftime.
- Jackson State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 67-54 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
- JSU scored six fast break points in the quarter.
- The Tigers came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Jackson's layup, to shrink the deficit to 67-60 with 6:38 to go in the contest.
- Mississippi State responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 82-72.
- Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 18 total points.
