Jackson State's Seventh-inning Comeback Falls Short in 9-8 Loss at Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team fell to Belhaven University after attempting a seventh-inning comeback. The Tigers scored five runs at the bottom of the seventh after entering the inning down 7-3, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory. 

Victoria Salazar (1-1) got the start for Jackson State in the circle and took the loss. Takiya Hill was a bright spot for the Tigers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing three innings, giving up one run on three hits, with no walks and one strikeout.

Jcae Jackson led the way offensively for the JSU, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Alexis Arredondo put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-1 with two walks and two RBIs. Samiyyah Huckabee also contributed, going 1-for-3 for Jackson State with a double and two RBIs.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State (2-3) trailed 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board.
  • Jace Jackson put Jackson State on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior Kennedy Carruth.
  • Belhaven expanded its lead to 5-1 before the Tigers' offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the sixth.
  • Jackson State managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Blazers.
  • Belhaven expanded its lead to 7-3 before the Jackson State offense got going, overtaking the Blazers to grab an 8-7 advantage in the seventh.
  • The Tigers bats heated up in the top of the seventh inning, scoring five runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Huckabee.
  • JSU was unable to hold the lead, as Belhaven scored two times in the bottom half of the seventh to grab the 9-8 win.

The Tigers will travel to Baton Rouge, La. to compete in the Battle on the Bluff hosted by Southern University. JSU will take on Grambling State and Southern Illinois Saturday. First pitch is set for noon and 2 p.m.
