Jackson State Track and Field Program Finishes the 2023 Indoor SWAC Championship with 14 Medalists

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jackson State Track and Field program closed out the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Championship with 14 medalists collectively for the men's and women's program. 

The Tigers clinched runner up with 120 points in the 2023 indoor SWAC championship behind Alabama State with 123 points. The Lady Tigers finished in fifth place with a total of 49 points behind the winner Alabama State (149 points, runner up PVAMU (127 points), third place TXSU (52.5 points) and fourth place Southern (51.5 points).

Javon Gray was named Most Valuable Player for the field events with a total of 18 points to clinch that title for the 2023 Indoor SWAC Championship MVP.

In the running events, Erkyah Garrett placed first in the women's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds. Marquentin Barnes finished second in the men's mile with a time of 8.35.06. 

Shawn Collins placed third in the men's 60 meter dash with a time of 6.71 seconds. Collins also placed first in the men's 200 meters dash with a time of 21.20 seconds to hit a new personal best.


In the field events, Javon Gray placed first in the men's triple jump with a leap of 15.89 meters. Gray also placed second in the men's long jump with a jump of 7.19 meters. Candace Mongo placed third in the women's long jump with a jump of 5.62 meters. 

Lilliann Dudley placed first in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.74 meters. Davieon Center placed second in the men's weight throw with a throw of 17.44 meters. Center also placed second in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.83 meters. Johnny Howell finished in third placed in the men's shot put with a throw of 15.33 meters.

During the men's 4x400 meter relay, the Tigers were disqualified during this race due to consecutive steps on the line. If the Tigers wasn't disqualified they would've won the championship title by one point. Instead, Alabama State took the lead with the final event of the pole vault contest to put them up by three points to clinch the title.
