JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball got a 29-point performance from the bench on the way to an 81-49 win against the
Alcorn State at home Saturday.
Jackson State (16-8, 13-1 SWAC) had two players score in double figures, led by
Jariyah Covington, who had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Liz Martino tacked on 11 points and two steals from the bench and
Keshuna Luckett added nine points and three steals.
Daphane White pulled down two offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into nine second chance points.
The JSU defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16
Alcorn State turnovers while committing 12. Those takeaways turned into 16 points on the other end of the floor.
Luckett's three steals led the way individually for the Lady Tigers.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 11-7, Jackson State went on a 7-0 run with 4:25 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Covington, to take a 14-11 lead.
- The Tigers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 19-13 advantage.
- Jackson State capitalized on three Alcorn State turnovers in the period, turning them into six points on the other end of the floor.
- JSU built that first quarter lead to 26-19 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 7:34 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Daja Woodard, to increase its lead to 33-19.
- The Tigers proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 40-23 advantage heading into halftime.
- Jackson State forced six Alcorn State turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.
- After the half, JSU continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 51-29 before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Covington, to expand its lead further to 58-29 with 3:22 to go in the third.
- Before the conclusion of the third period, the Braves had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 63-37 edge.
- Jackson State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 23 third-quarter points.
- Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Hayleigh Breland's three, to grow the lead to 77-46 with 1:40 to go in the contest.
- The Tigers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 81-49 win.
- Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 13 of its 18 total points.
