TALLAHASSEE, Fla.| The Jackson State softball team fell 6-5 in a nine-inning matchup to Florida A&M Saturday afternoon in its second Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup of the season.
Junior Victoria Salazar (3-5) took the loss in the circle for Jackson State. Macie Kuppenbender started the ballgame and went seven innings, surrendering five runs, two earned, on eight hits, walking one and striking out one.
Offensively, the Tigers were paced by Monica Serrano, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and two RBI. Marissa Medina furnished a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Samiyyah Huckabee also helped out for Jackson State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State (10-13, 0-2 SWAC) trailed 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board.
- The Tigers got an RBI single from Mari Stephens, scoring Serrano from third base.
- The score stayed at 1-1 until the very next inning when the Tigers put up runs again.
- Jackson State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Serrano that scored freshman Brooklyn Morris and freshman Madison Perry, which brought the Tigers' lead to 3-1.
- Florida A&M fired back to even the ballgame at three before Jackson State reclaimed a 4-3 advantage in the fourth inning.
- JSU pushed across a run on Medina's two-out RBI double.
- The RattlerS then tied the game at four before Jackson State came back to reclaim their advantage in the sixth inning.
- Huckabee crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Tigers, bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of Jackson State.
- JSU was unable to hold the lead, as FAMU scored two times over the remaining three innings to grab the 6-5 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the third when it pushed two runs across.
- JSU's pitchers limited Florida A&M to just 2-for-10 (.200) with runners in scoring position and faced 40 FAMU hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out one.
- The Tigers drew six walks from Florida A&M pitching.
- Serrano led the Tigers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
- Florida A&M was led offensively by senior Nyah Morgan, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI.
- Cris'Deona Beasley led the Rattlers pitching staff, throwing five innings of one-run ball.
