Baseball Loses SWAC Opener To Alabama A&M

The Jackson State baseball team lost to Alabama A&M 13-9 Friday night at Braddy Field in the Southwestern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Jackson State (12-4, 0-1) erased 3-0 and 8-4 deficits but could not mount a late-game comeback. Myles White had two hits to lead the Tigers at the plate, Bret Mersman and Jordan Young each drove in two runs, and Jatavis Melton scored three times.

Trailing 3-0 in the third, White singled to center with one out and scored on Daniel Bannon's RBI double down the right-field line. With two out and following an intentional walk to Ty Hill, Mersman singled to left center, scoring Bannon and Hill to tie the score at 3-3.

Trailing 8-4, the Tigers rallied over the next two innings. In the fifth, Young walked with the bases loaded, Caleb Evans was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Luiz' suicide squeeze bunt helped cut the deficit to 8-7.

In the sixth, Melton walked to lead off the inning, moved to second and later third on a pair of passed balls, and scored on a Young safety squeeze bunt to tie the score at 8-8.

However, Alabama A&M (8-8, 1-0) scored five runs in the seventh to take the lead for good.

Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m.
