Big Innings Power Baseball To Run-Rule Win

Jackson State baseball used big innings to pull away from Alabama A&M 18-6 in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Braddy Field.

Jordon Smiley went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, and Jatavis Melton went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as Jackson State (13-4, 1-1) won for the first time in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Marshal Luiz went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the 10-hit attack.

Christian Womble (3-0) started on the mound and picked up the win, improving to 3-0 on the season. The right-hander went five innings, giving up six runs, four earned, on five hits, walking eight, and striking out five. Brandon Haston threw two shutout innings, allowing no hits and no walks, striking out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED

JSU scored two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, eight runs in the fifth, and five runs in the sixth to take control.

The Tigers were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Jackson State managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Tigers' deficit expanded to 6-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. Jackson State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single by Ty Hill, which tightened the Bulldogs lead to 6-5.

Jackson State kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard before rallying to snatch a 13-6 lead in the fifth. The Tigers bats heated up in the inning, scoring eight runs, including a two-run single by Jaelen Williams.

Jackson State held the Bulldogs scoreless before their offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Tigers scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Smiley.

Game three of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
