Jackson State Comes Up Short in Loss to Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.| Jackson State put together a valiant effort on Sunday afternoon in game three of its weekend series, but ultimately came up short, falling to Bethune-Cookman 6-4.

Victoria Salazar (4-6) started in the circle for JSU and took the loss. Isabel Gusman led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Brooklyn Morris put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 4-0, Jackson State (15-17, 4-5) first put runs on the board in the third inning.
  • The Tigers got an RBI single from Morris, scoring freshman Samiyyah Huckabee from third base.
  • JSU's deficit expanded to 6-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning.
  • Jackson State scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Gusman, scoring freshman Jalia Hubbard and freshman Jace Jackson, which tightened the Wildcats' lead to 6-4.
  • The Tigers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the fifth when it pushed three runs across.
  • Huckabee stole two bases in Sunday's game.
  • JSU went 3-for-9 (.333) with runners in scoring position.
  • Jackson State's pitchers faced 29 Bethune-Cookman hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and four fly balls.
