The Tigers and Lady Tigers Kick Off Outdoor Season to a Great Start At Miss College Opener

CLINTON, Ms. - Behind a dominating display from the Jackson State Track and Field program,  the Tigers saw a number of event winners and top 5 finishes on the first meet in the 2023 outdoor season. 

In the running events, the Lady Tigers swept the 400 meter hurdles going first, second and third place. Callie Calicut finished in first place with a time of 1.03.96 seconds, Jiya Clayton finished in second place with a time of 1:03.97 and Erkyah Garrett finished in third place with a time of 1:04.82 seconds in the women's 400 hurdles. The tigers went second and third place during the men's 400 meter hurdles. Ivan Donaldson finished with a time of 54.54 seconds and Tyler Tremble finished with a time of 55.86 seconds.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers both placed first in the 4x100 meter relay. Followed with the 400 meter dash, Carrington Blair finished in second place with a time of 57.40 seconds, Artiaja Richardson finished in third place with a time of 57.50 seconds and Kaseem Ibraheem-Washington finished second with a time of 48.16 seconds.

The women's 100 meter hurdles, Erkyah Garrett finished in first place with a time of 14.18 seconds and Ivan Donaldson finished in first place with a time of 14.87 in the 110 meter hurdles. In the 800 meter dash, Amara Hawkins-Quinones finished in second place with a time of 2:20.26 seconds. During the men's 200 meters, Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. finished first with a time of 21.72 seconds.

In the field events, the women's hammer throw, Alexis Morris placed first with a mark of 48.22 meters and she also finished in second place with a throw of 40.36 meters in the women's discus throw. Lillian Dudley finished first in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.29 meters and Davieon Center (15.50 meters) and Johnny Howell (15.27 meters) finished second and third during the men's shot put. 

In the men's hammer throw, Howell also finished in second place with a throw of 46.82 meters followed by his teammate, Jalen Walker who finished in third place with a throw of 45.47 meters.

Jordyn Tiggs finished in second place with a jump of 5.63 meters in the women's long jump and Jai Banks- Chambers finished in third place with a jump of 6.81 meters in the men's long jump.

During the final event of the meet, the men's 4x400 meter relay, the 'A' squad finished in second place with a time of 3:15.44 seconds and the 'B' squad finished in third place with a time of 3:26.15 seconds to wrap of the 2023 Mississippi College Opener meet.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers return back to action on March 17th-18th for the Jim Maze Invitational at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA.
