ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Jackson State baseball team took game two of its three-game series at Mississippi Valley State 18-7 Saturday at Magnolia Field.
A sixth-run fifth and a five-run ninth proved to be the difference for Jackson State, which scored in six of nine innings and never trailed in the contest.
Ty Hill, Jatavis Melton, and Myles White each had three hits for the Tigers, who got two hits and four RBI from Marcus Atterberry and three RBI from Colby Guy.
Leading 6-3 after four innings, the fifth provided a scoring cushion for JSU. With one out, White doubled to right field before consecutive walks to Jordon Smiley, Marshal Luiz, and Colby Guy scored White. Daniel Bannon's sacrifice fly scored Smiley to extend the lead to 8-3. Melton's infield single scored Luiz, before Hill's double to center scored Guy. Bret Mersman's two-run double to right scored Melton and Hill to extend the Tigers' lead to 11-3.
Leading 13-7 after eight, Jackson State put the game away in the ninth. A bases-loaded walk to Hill scored Guy. With one out, Atterberry's two-run single scored Bannon and Melton to give the Tigers a 16-7 lead. Hill then scored on an error before Smiley's single to center field scored White for the final margin.
Jesse Caver (5-2) got the win, going six innings, walking one, and striking out four.
The finale of the series is Sunday at noon.
