Baseball Takes Two From Rust

The Jackson State baseball team swept a Tuesday doubleheader from Rust, winning 18-1 and 12-1 both in seven innings at Braddy Field.

GAME 1 | Jackson State 18, Rust 1
Jackson State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely.

Sophomore Colby Guy (3-2) got the win for Jackson State. The right-hander went three shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out five. Junior Daelan Caraway also pitched well, going 1.2 shutout innings while allowing one hit.

At the plate, Sophomore Omar Gomez went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Jatavis Melton, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double, two walks and three RBI. Junior Daniel Bannon put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Junior Justin Johnson also chipped in for Jackson State, putting together two hits in two trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

In the nightcap, the Tigers again got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely.

Sophomore Brandon Haston (1-0) got the win for Jackson State (19-12). The left-hander went four innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out seven. Freshman Erwins Branche also pitched well, going 2.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out three.

Guy led the way offensively for the Tigers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and three RBI. Melton and Ty Hill each went 2-for-3 at the plate combining for three RBI.  Senior Marshal Luiz went 1-for-3 for Jackson State with a double, a walk and an RBI.
