MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Jackson State baseball team lost in the final two games at Alabama State by scores of 6-1 and 6-5 Sunday at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Game 1 – ASU 6, Tigers 1: Marshal Luiz went 2-2 with a walk as Jackson State dropped the Sunday opener.
The Tigers scored the lone run in the second inning. Cesar Saavedra singled up the middle with one out and moved to third on a single to right field by Luiz. Omar Gomez' sacrifice bunt scored Saavedra.
Game 2 – ASU 6, Tigers 5: Jackson State's ninth-inning rally came up just short of completing the comeback.
Trailing 6-3 in the ninth with two outs, Daniel Bannon singled through the left side and advanced to second before Jatavis Melton walked. Ty Hill then singled up the middle to score Bannon. Pinch hitter Bret Mersman then singled through the right side to score Melton, but the Tigers lined out on the final at-bat to end the game.
Hill went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Bannon, Melton, and Myles White each had two hits in the game.
Jackson State returns to action Tuesday at Southeastern La. at 6 p.m.
