HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Jackson State baseball team won at Alabama A&M 14-8 Saturday at Bulldog Baseball Field.
Jatavis Melton homered and doubled twice as part of his three-hit, three-RBI, three-runs scored game. Daniel Bannon also had three hits, while Bret Mersman (two RBI, one run scored), Myles White (two runs scored, two RBI), and Cesar Saavedra (two RBI, three runs scored) each had two hits.
Mersman and Caleb Evans had RBI in the first inning as the Tigers (20-17 overall, 5-13 SWAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, the second Melton double of the game drove in a run, and Melton scored later in the inning on an error as Jackson State led 6-0.
Leading 6-3 after three innings, Melton's two-run homer to left in the fourth scored Saavedra who walked as the Tigers led 8-3.
After the Bulldogs (12-21, 3-12) rallied to tie the game 8-8 after six innings, Jackson State took the lead for good in the seventh. Bannon led off the inning with a single to left and scored three batters later on White's single to left field to give the Tigers a 9-8 lead. Evans then singled to left, scoring Mersman who singled earlier in the inning to push the margin to 10-8. Marshal Luiz's sacrifice bunt scored White, before Saavedra reached on an error, scoring Evans for a 12-8 JSU lead.
The Tigers added to their lead in the ninth on a two-out RBI double by Saavedra, who later scored on a stolen base and throwing error for the final margin.
Daelen Caraway (2-0) got the win in relief for the Tigers. Erick Gonzalez pitched the final three innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn his fifth save of the season.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.
