2HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Jackson State baseball team won the series finale at Alabama A&M 15-7 Sunday to take the series two games to one.
For the second straight game, Jatavis Melton homered, doubled twice, and drove in three runs while scoring a season-high five runs. Ty Hill homered on Sunday for the second straight week, had three hits, drove in four runs and scored twice. Daniel Bannon had three hits for the second straight game, drove in a run, and scored three times, and Cesar Saavedra also had three hits, drove in a run, and scored three times for Jackson State (21-17 overall, 6-12 SWAC).
Melton's game-opening double sparked a three-run first inning for the Tigers. Bannon followed with a triple to score Melton before Hill's two-run homer to left field gave JSU a 3-0 lead.
In the second, Cesar Saavedra singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Melton's two-run homer to left-center field to increase the Tigers' lead to 5-1.
Leading 7-1 after five innings, the Tigers added runs in each of the next three innings. Melton reached on a one-out error, moved to third on a single by Bannon, and scored on Hill's single to center. Following a walk to Bret Mersman, Myles White's sacrifice fly scored Bannon to give Jackson State a 9-1 lead.
Leading 9-4 after six innings, Saavedra's RBI triple to left center and Melton's RBI double to right highlighted a five-run seventh to give the Tigers a 14-4 advantage.
Christian Womble (6-1) got the win on the mound, going six innings allowing six hits and four runs with three walks and six strikeouts.
Jackson State will now host three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference series beginning this weekend against Bethune-Cookman. Game times are Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Braddy Field.
