The Jackson State baseball team lost 9-7 in 13 innings to Bethune-Cookman Friday night at Braddy Field.
Trailing 7-5 in the ninth, JSU rallied to tie the score. Marshal Luiz walked to lead off the inning and was pinch run for by Austin Campbell. Omar Gomez then walked before Cesar Saavedra's bunt single loaded the bases. Jatavis Melton's sacrifice bunt scored Campbell before Daniel Bannon's RBI groundout scored Gomez with the tying run.
Saavedra had four hits and scored three runs to lead the 11-hit attack for Jackson State (21-18 overall, 6-13 SWAC). A total of four JSU pitchers combined to strike out 19 Bethune-Cookman batters.
Game two of the series is Saturday at 3 p.m. at Braddy Field.
