TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Jackson State baseball team took game one of its three-game series on the road, defeating Florida A&M 4-1 Thursday at Moore-Kittles Field.
JSU scored all its runs in the first two innings. Daniel Bannon opened the game by reaching base on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jatavis Melton. Ty Hill then doubled to center, scoring Bannon. Bret Mersman followed with a single to right center, scoring Hill for a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning, Marshal Luiz led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Colby Guy. With two outs, Luiz scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Melton then doubled to center, before Hill was intentionally walked. Mersman then singled up the middle, scoring Melton for a 4-0 lead.
JSU starter Christian Womble made the lead stand up. He pitched six innings, allowing six hits and one run, walking two, and striking out five. Brandon Haston and Erick Gonzalez pitched the final three shutout innings, allowing one walk with five strikeouts.
The Tigers (17-10 overall, 4-6 SWAC) added insurance runs in the ninth. Marcus Atterberry walked and stole second before Myles White was hit by a pitch. Both players advanced on a wild pitch before Caleb Evans' two-run double scored both runners.
Game two of the series is Friday at 4 p.m.
