Tigers Take Two From Valley

The Jackson State baseball team clinched its fourth consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference series win with a doubleheader sweep of Mississippi Valley State by the scores of 4-1 and 12-2 in seven innings at Braddy Field.

The series finale is at 1 p.m., with senior day festivities beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Game 1 - Tigers 4, MVSU 1: Jatavis Melton and Daniel Bannon each had two hits, with Melton scoring three times in the series-opening win.

Melton leadoff with a triple and scored on a Bannon ground out as JSU took a 1-0 lead. In the third, Cesar Saavedra reached on an error, Melton walked, and Bannon reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Ty Hill then walked to score Saavedra before Melton scored on a fielder's choice as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Melton singled with one out and came around on a Melton single for a 4-0 lead.

Jesse Caver (6-4), Austin Campbell, and Erick Gonzalez (seventh save) combined to allow four hits and one unearned run.

Game 2 – Tigers 12, MVSU 2 (7 inn.): Bret Mersman, Myles White, and Marcus Atterberry each had two hits, with Atterberry driving in four runs in the nightcap.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Tigers took the lead. Hill singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and moved to third on a single by Mersman. White's bunt single scored Hill, and Mersman scored on a throwing error on the play to tie the game. Atterberry's RBI groundout scored White for a 3-2 lead.

JSU broke the game open with a five-run fifth, highlighted by three two-out hits. Omar Gomez walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Melton walked before Bannon's squeeze bunt scored Gomez for a 4-2 lead. After Hill walked, Mersman singled up the middle to score Melton. White followed with a single to center scoring Hill before Atterberry's double to right center scored Mersman and White for an 8-2 lead.

Leading 9-2, the Tigers scored three in the seventh for the win. Hill was  hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. White walked before Atterberry singled down the left field line scoring Hill. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Marshal Luiz' walked to load the bases. Gomez walked to score White before Saavedra singled to left scoring Atterberry. Melton was hit by a pitch to score Luiz with the winning run.

Colby Guy (4-4) got the win, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, pitching out of jams as the Delta Devils stranded 10 runners on base.
