The Jackson State baseball team narrowly missed a series sweep, as Mississippi Valley scored two runs in the ninth to defeat the Tigers 7-6 in the home finale on Senior Day at Braddy Field.
Omar Gomez and Marcus Atterberry each hit solo home runs for Jackson State, as their blasts in the third and fourth inning, respectively, gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
After the Delta Devils scored five runs in the sixth to take the lead, Jackson State tied the score in the home half of the inning. With one out, Daniel Bannon walked before Ty Hill's single through the right side moved Bannon to third. Atterberry then singled to center field, scoring Bannon. With two out, Caleb Evans was hit by a pitch, and both Hill and Evans advanced on a wild pitch. Bret Mersman's two-run single to right center scored Hill and Evans to tie the score at 5-5.
In the seventh, the Tigers regained the lead. Jatavis Melton and Bannon had back-to-back singles through the left side. Hill's sacrifice fly to center scored Melton to give JSU a 6-5 lead.
Gomez had three hits, while Atterberry and Melton each had two hits for Jackson State (27-21 overall, 12-15 SWAC), which will conclude the regular season at Bethune-Cookman in a SWAC Eastern Division series beginning Thursday.
