Track Teams Set For SWAC Outdoor Championship

Championship season is here for the Jackson State men's and women's outdoor track and field teams as they compete this weekend in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Prairie View A&M.

The three-day meet begins Thursday at 9:30 a.m., with Friday's action also beginning at 9:30 a.m. Championship Saturday starts at 11 a.m. with field event finals in men's discus, men's high jump, women's shot put, men's triple jump, men's pole vault, and women's triple jump. Track finals begin at 5 p.m. and will be video streamed on the SWAC Digital Network. Live results will be available all three days via gojsutigers.com.

The JSU men finished second in the SWAC Indoor Championship, while the JSU women finished fifth in February.

Senior Shawn Collins leads the SWAC and is 18th in the nation in the 400 with a time of 45.60. Collins also ranks sixth in the SWAC in the 100 (10.39), and second in the 200 (20.83). Freshman Sedgwrick Pitts Jr. is seventh in the SWAC in the 100 at 10.40.

The Tigers have two runners in the top four in the 1500 meters in seniors Marquentin Barnes (2nd at 3:59.31) and Jallah Galimah (4th at 4:01.13). JSU has two senior athletes in the top ranks in the 3000-meter steeplechase.  Barnes ranks second (9:34.07), and Galimah ranks sixth (9:57.76).

Galimah (fourth at 15:42.71), freshman Raekwon Hopkins (seventh at 16:24.52), and senior Jeremiah Hudson (eighth at 16:28.17) are among SWAC leaders in the 5,000 meters.

Freshman Ivan Donaldson is ranked fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.40, and is fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 53.78.

Freshman Sherman Hawkins continues to lead the SWAC and ranks 21st nationally in the high jump with a mark of 2.16m (7'1").  Junior Javon Gray remains second in the SWAC in the triple jump at 14.98m (49' 1.75").

In the shot put, junior Davieon Center ranks second (15.50m / 50' 10.25"), ahead of teammate senior Johnny Howell (third at 15.47m / 50' 9.25"). Center is seventh in the discus (43.21m / 141' 9"), and eighth in the hammer (43.75m / 143' 6"). Howell also ranks third in the hammer throw (50.69m / 166' 4").

Freshman Jalen Walker is third in the league in the discus at 45.44m (149' 1"), and is fifth in the hammer at 46.63m (153' 0"). Sophomore Tayari Sherwood ranks sixth in the javelin at 46.45m (152' 5").

In the relays, the JSU men rank second in the 4x100 (40.14), and eighth in the 4x400 (3:14.94). The JSU women rank sixth in the 4x100 (47.09), and eighth in the 4x400 (3:49.32).

On the women's side, sophomore Erkyah Garrett is first in the SWAC in the 100 hurdles (13.72). The Lady Tigers have two runners at the top of the rankings in the 400 hurdles, with sophomore Jiya Clayton fifth (1:02.48), and freshman Callie Calicut seventh (1:03.96).

Jordyn Tiggs is seventh in the long jump with a mark of 5.63m (18' 5.75").

Sophomore Lillian Dudley has the SWAC's best mark in the shot put at 14.99m (49' 2.25"), and is eighth in the hammer at 47.57m (156' 1")

Junior Alexis Morris is second in the discus at 43.68m (143'4"), and third in the hammer at 49.89m (163' 8").

Junior Kymoi Noray has the SWAC's best mark in the javelin at 44.10m (144' 8").
