The Jackson State baseball team rallied with runs in the seventh and eighth innings to beat Florida A&M 8-7 Saturday at Braddy Field.
Trailing 7-5 in the seventh with one out, Bret Mersman and Myles White hit back-to-back singles. With two out, Marshal Luiz singled through the left side to score Mersman to cut the margin to 7-6.
In the eighth, Cesar Saavedra and Jatavis Melton with back-to-back bunt singles. Following a sacrifice bunt by Daniel Bannon, Ty Hill was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mersman was hit by a pitch to score Saavedra with the tying run. White's ground out to second base scored Melton with the winning run.
Daelen Caraway (3-0) got the win in relief. Erick Gonzalez pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixth save.
Melton and Caleb Evans each had three hits for Jackson State in the 14-hit attack. Leading 2-0 after three innings, JSU extended the margin in the fourth. Evans led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Luiz. Back-to-back infield singles by Omar Gomez and Saavedra loaded the bases. Evans then scored on a wild pitch before Melton's two-run single up the middle scored Gomez and Saavedra for a 5-0 lead.
Florida A&M then rallied with four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to set up the dramatic Tigers' rally.
The final game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m. at Braddy Field.
