The Jackson State baseball team beat Florida A&M 10-7 Sunday at Braddy Field to win its third straight Southwestern Athletic Conference series.
Back-to-back four-run innings gave JSU the lead for good. Caleb Evans' grand slam in the fourth inning erased a 2-0 deficit.
In the fifth, Omar Gomez led off with a double, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Cesar Saavedra who reached on an error. Jatavis Melton's triple to center field scored both runners to extend to a 6-2 lead. Daniel Bannon's sacrifice fly scored Melton to give the Tigers a 7-2. Ty Hill then walked, moved to second on a single by Mersman, and scored on a single to left field by Myles White for an 8-2 lead.
After Florida A&M scored five in the sixth to cut the margin to 8-7, the Tigers answered with a run in the home sixth. Bannon's two-out singled to right center scored Gomez who led off the inning with a single for a 9-7 lead.
In the eighth, a double steal and a throwing error allowed Luiz to score the final run.
Melton, Bannon, and Gomez each had two hits for Jackson State (25-20 overall, 10-14 SWAC). Christian Womble (8-1) pitched 5 1/3 innings to get the win. Erick Gonzalez pitched the final two innings to earn the save for the second straight day and now has seven saves on the season.
Jackson State plays at Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a non-conference game Wednesday at 3 p.m.
