JACKSON, Miss.| Hope Briggs and Alexis Williams both notched double-doubles to help power the Jackson State volleyball team to a 3-1 win (25-21, 22-25, 25-9, 25-18) over the Mississippi Valley State Friday evening at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
The conference win improved Jackson State's record to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in SWAC action.
The Tigers were led by the double-doubles from Briggs, who had 10 kills and 12 digs, and Williams, who had 17 kills and 13 digs. Nyjha Marcelin added 12 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Karys Dove chipped in for with 11 digs to go with three blocks from Jordan Jones.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Tigers endured a back-and-forth first set to win 25-21 in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.
SET 2 | Jackson State then dropped the second set 25-22, tying the match at a set apiece. The Tigers rallied from an eight-point 15-7 deficit, but Mississippi Valley State hung on to take the set.
SET 3 | Jackson State got back on the winning track, emerging victorious in set three and taking a two sets to one lead in the match. The Tigers scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-9 victory. Jackson State ended on a high note, claiming its biggest lead, 16 points, to close out the set. The Jackson State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 4 | Jackson State kept the momentum going, closing out the match with a 25-18 set-four victory. The Tigers took control of the set at 2-1 and held the lead the rest of the way. Jackson State led by as many as 10 points at 21-11 before closing out the stanza, totaling 17 kills in the process. Jackson State also supplemented their offense with four aces in the set.
