Five Tigers Score in Double Figures as JSU Breezes Past Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Five Tigers scored in double figures as Jackson State never trailed ASU in its first SWAC road trip of the seson. Andriana Avent led the Tigers with a game-high 17 points followed by Angel Jackson who had 14 points and six blocks.

Miya Crump registered 11 points and seven rebounds, while Ti'Ian Boler and Keshuna Luckett each finished with 10 points each.

The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Alabama State to just 11.8 percent from beyond the arc in a 2-for-17 shooting performance on the way to a 75-49 win over the Hornets on the road Thursday.

Jackson State out-rebounded Alabama State 39-36 in Thursday's game, led by seven boards from Zakiya Mahoney.

How It Happened

  • After jumping out to a 6-3 advantage, Jackson State (7-6, 2-0 SWAC) went on a 10-0 run with 7:57 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Ti'Ian Boler, to increase its lead to 16-3.
  • The Tigers then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 27-7 advantage.
  • Jackson State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for seven of its 27 total points.
  • JSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 4:30 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Ja'Leah Hickmon, to increase its lead to 39-16.
  • Alabama State (1-13, 1-2 SWAC) cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 41-24 advantage heading into halftime.
  • Jackson State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.
  • The Tigers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Mahoney, to expand its lead further to 50-27 with 6:40 to go in the third.
  • Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hornets had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Tigers still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-37 edge.
  • Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 18 points in the paint.
  • JSU kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Crump's layup, to grow the lead to 71-47 with 2:58 to go in the contest.
  • The Tigers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 75-49 win.
  • Jackson State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
