Men's Hoops Fall at Bethune-Cookman

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Treyon Johnson totaled 10 rebounds, but the Jackson State men's basketball team fell to the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 82-71 on the road Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium.

Johnson added seven points to his 10-rebound game for the Tigers (8-11, 4-2 SWAC). Ken Evans Jr. helped out with 19 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and Coltie Young chipped in with 16 points and four steals.

Johnson pulled down five offensive rebounds to lead the Jackson State offense, which grabbed 17 boards and turned them into 16 second-chance points.

In Saturday's game, Jackson State forced 17 Bethune-Cookman (9-10, 4-2 SWAC) turnovers. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Young's four steals led the way for Jackson State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 38-26, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run with 2:57 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 38-34. The Tigers deficit remained the same as they entered halftime trailing 41-37.

Bethune-Cookman kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 68-47 advantage before Jackson State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Zeke Cook's layup, to shrink the deficit to 68-54 with 8:56 to go in the contest. The Tigers kept their comeback going, but Bethune-Cookman managed to hold on for the 82-71 win. Jackson State made the most of 13 offensive rebounds to tack on 10 second-chance points out of 34 in the period.

Game Notes

  • Jackson State lit it up from beyond the arc, knocking down 10 3-pointers in the game.
  • The Tigers shared the ball well, recording an assist on 76 percent of made baskets; those 19 assists were a season-high for JSU. 
  • The Jackson State defense forced 17 turnovers.
  • The Tigers actively affected shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
  • Jackson State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 17 offensive boards in the game.
  • Evans led the Tigers with 19 points.
  • Jackson State got a team-high 10 rebounds from Johnson.
  • Chase Adams tied a season-high in assists with the right.
