JSU Claws Alcorn State in SWAC Opener

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team kept Alcorn State to just 15.4 percent from deep in a 2-for-13 shooting performance on the way to a 74-46 win over the Braves at home Saturday in its Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opener.

The Tigers had five players score in double figures, led by Ti'lan Boler, who had 17 points. Andriana Avent tacked on 14 points and two steals off the bench and Miya Crump chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.

Led by Angel Jackson's four offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.

JSU forced 15 Alcorn State turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Saturday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Hayleigh Breland led the way individually with two steals.

  • The Tigers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 9-0 run to expand its lead further to 41-25 with 3:44 to go in the third.
  • Before the third period was over, the JSU added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-32 edge.
  • Jackson State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 22 third-quarter points.
  • JSU continued to widen that lead, expanding it to 69-44 before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 74-44 with 33 seconds to go in the contest.
  • The Braves narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but Jackson State still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-46 win.
