Jackson State Defeats Prairie View A&M in a Five-set Thriller at Home

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State volleyball team never backed down on its way to a five-set win (25-20, 26-28, 25-17, 24-26, 15-10) over the Prairie View A&M Panthers Sunday at home at Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. 

The conference win improved Jackson State's record to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in SWAC action.

The Tigers were led by a double-double from Jayden James, who registered 25 kills and 10 digs on the day as well as a double-double from Karys Dove who recorded 42 assists and 12 digs in the match. Hope Briggs also added 17 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Trinity Bryant chipped in for with 20 digs to go with six blocks from Jordan Jones.

How It Happened
  • Jackson State (6-8, 2-1 SWAC) won the first point and never trailed to win the first set 25-20. 
  • The Tigers led by as many as eight points at 19-11 before finishing off the set.
  • Tigers lost the second set despite a strong performance on the attacking end.
  • Jackson State put together a .302 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set loss.
  • JSU bounced back following the set-two loss to take the third set and a 2-1 lead in the match.
  • The Tigers led from the opening point on in the set to earn a 25-17 victory.
  • Jackson State opened up as much as a 12-point lead at 18-6 before finishing off the set, collecting 19 kills while only registering two attack errors in the process.
  • JSU couldn't finish off a four-set win as the Panthers forced a fifth set with a 26-24 victory.
  • The Tigers battled back from a seven-point hole at 10-3, but it wasn't enough as Prairie View A&M hung on to win the set.
  • Jackson State and Prairie View A&M went back and forth all game, trading set wins until the Tigers took the fifth set 15-10 and the match.
  • A solid performance on the attacking side helped the Tigers to the victory.
  • Jackson State registered a .684 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set win.
  • JSU opened up a 14-8 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there.

Inside the Numbers

  • Kyra Dove was efficient in attacking situations in the match, accumulating 12 kills while hitting .688.
  • Karys Dove had a team-high two aces in the win.
  • Jackson State put together a strong attacking performance, notching 82 kills in the match to combine for a .370 hitting percentage on the night.
  • JSU never trailed on the way to its first and third-set victories.
  • Hope Briggs added 17 kills to the Tigers' attack followed by Alexis Williams who finished with 14 kills in the match.
  • Karys Dove, Williams and Bryant each registered one ace in the game.
  • Naija Gadis came up with 28 assists for the Tigers.

The Tigers will return to the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center to host Texas Southern on Monday night. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
