COOKEVILLE, Tenn.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench, but fell 84-56 to the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on the road Thursday.
The Tigers (1-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Taleah Dilworth, who had 18 points. Tierney Kelsey tacked on 13 points and four steals from the bench and Zoe Cooper added four points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Cooper pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Jackson State, grabbing 12 boards and turning them into eight second chance points.
The Jackson State defense was a problem in Thursday's game, forcing 22 Tennessee Tech turnovers while committing 15. Those takeaways turned into 21 points on the other end of the floor. Kelsey's four steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-12 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Tigers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 50-29 halftime deficit.
- Tennessee Tech continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-29 advantage before Jackson State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Dilworth, to trim its deficit to 56-35 with 7:40 to go in the third.
- Tennessee Tech countered and stretched its lead to 73-41 heading into the fourth.
- Jackson State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 12 points in the paint.
- Tennessee Tech kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 78-44 advantage before Jackson State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Shalance Montoya's layup, to shrink the deficit to 78-54 with 5:14 to go in the contest.
- Tennessee Tech responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 84-56.
- Jackson State took advantage of six Tennessee Tech turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
