OXFORD, Miss.| The Jackson State women's basketball team got a 23-point showing from the bench, but fell 76-44 to the Ole Miss Rebels on the road Monday.
JSU had two players score in double figures, led by Diaka Berete, who had 10 points and two steals. Taleah Dilworth added 10 points and Shalance Montoya added eight points and seven rebounds.
Led by Montoya's five offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
The Jackson State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 17 Ole Miss turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Berete's two steals led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (1-3) struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-9 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Tigers fought back in the second period, narrowing the deficit to 31-22 by the time halftime rolled around.
- JSU's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Tigers faced a 54-30 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter.
- Jackson State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled two of the team's eight third-quarter points.
- Ole Miss (3-1) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 74-39 advantage before Jackson State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Berete's layup, to shrink the deficit to 74-44 with 53 seconds to go in the contest.
- The Rebels responded and outscored the Tigers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-44.
- JSU fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
