MACON, Ga.| Four Tigers scored in double figures as the Jackson State women's basketball team defeated Mercer on the road Thursday evening. JSU also got a 30-point showing from the bench on the way to its 66-54 victory.
Jackson State's (2-8) offense was led by Leianya Massenat, who had 16 points and seven rebounds. Jaileyah Cotton added 13 points and seven rebounds and Taleah Dilworth helped out with 13 points.
Jackson State grabbed 42 rebounds in Thursday's game compared to Mercer's 34, led by 10 boards from Shalance Montoya. The Tigers also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 18 rebounds into nine second chance points.
JSU forced 15 Mercer turnovers while committing 11 themselves in Thursday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Diaka Berete's three steals led the way for Jackson State.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 2-0, Jackson State went on a 6-0 run with 9:28 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Massenat, to take a 6-2 lead.
- The Tigers then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 25-20 advantage.
- Jackson State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 25 total points.
- JSU kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 11-0 run starting at the 3:16 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Berete, to increase its lead to 38-26, a score that would hold until halftime.
- The Tigers forced four Mercer turnovers in the period and turned them into six points.
- Following intermission, Jackson State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 47-33 before going on an 8-0 run to expand its lead further to 55-33 with 2:09 to go in the third.
- JSU held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-35 edge.
- The navy and white played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
- The Tigers then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter.
- Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring five of its nine total points.

- Jackson State shot 36.4 percent (24-for-66) from the field and 75 percent (12-for-16) from the free throw line.
- Leianya Massenat and Diaka Berete came off the bench to score 16 and 11 points, respectively.
