ST. LOUIS, Mo. | Jayme Mitchell Jr. led three players in double figures for Jackson State on Monday night, but it wasn't enough as Saint Louis pulled away late for a 74-66 victory at Chaifetz Arena.
Mitchell finished the night with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor including connecting on 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. He was joined in double figures by Shannon Grant with 12 points and seven rebounds, connecting on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, and Daeshun Ruffin with 10 points in his first game of the season.
Jackson State finished the night shooting 38.8 (26-of-67) percent from the floor and 41.7 (10-of-24) percent from beyond the arc. They also connected on 80.0 (4-of-5) percent from the free throw line.
Meanwhile, Saint Louis was led by Giibson Jimerson with 21 points, while Isaiah Swope added 18 and Robbie Avila 15. They finished the night shooting 52.8 (28-of-53) percent from the floor and 40.0 (10-of-25) percent from beyond the arc, while also shooting 36.4 (8-of-22) percent from the free throw line.
Inside the Numbers
Jackson State jumped out an 11-point lead in the first half and led 35-30 due largely to shooting 38.9 (14-of-36) percent from the floor and 35.7 (5-of-14) percent from beyond the arc. They also connected on both free throws and grabbed 16 rebounds, led by Grant with eight first-half points.
In the second half, the Tigers shot 38.7 (12-of-31) percent from the floor and 50.0 (5-of-10) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the night shooting 66.7 (2-of-3) percent from the free throw line and grabbed 14 second-half rebounds.
Meanwhile, Saint Louis shot 48.0 (12-of-25) percent from the floor and 37.5 (3-of-8) percent from beyond the arc in the first half. They shot 25.0 (3-of-12) percent from the free throw line and grabbed 23 total rebounds in the first half.Â
In the second half, they shot 57.1 (16-of-28) percent from the floor and 41.2 (7-of-17) percent from beyond the arc. They finished the second half shooting 50.0 (5-of-10) percent from the free throw line with 20 rebounds.
Game Notes
- Ruffin made his first appearance in a Jackson State uniform against the Billikens, earning the start in his first game and scoring in double figures. He was part of the fifth different starting lineup in eight games for Jackson State.
- Mitchell scored in double figures for the fifth time this season and Grant for the second.
- Jackson State outscored Saint Louis 22-8 off the bench on the night with most of those points coming from Mitchell. They also outscored Saint Louis 20-9 in points off turnovers.
