JACKSON, Miss. - Jordan O'Neal notched his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds to help the Jackson State men's basketball team knock off the Florida A&M Rattlers 77-55 at home Saturday afternoon at the Williams Athletics and Assembly Center.
The Tigers (11-14, 7-5 SWAC), who won their third game in a row, had four players score in double figures, led by O'Neal, who recorded his second double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Ken Evans added 12 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Coltie Young and Keionte Cornelius helped out with 10 points each.
Led by O'Neal's four offensive rebounds, Jackson State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 23 second-chance points.
Jackson State's defense held Florida A&M (4-19, 2-10 SWAC) to only 36.7 percent shooting from the field, including 18.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Rattlers did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with five offensive rebounds while Jackson State cleared 30 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 20-18, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run with 7:47 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Keiveon Hunt, to take a 26-20 lead. The Tigers then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 36-28 advantage. Jackson State did most of its first-half damage in the paint, scoring 24 of its 36 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Jackson State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 64-48 before going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 72-48 with 1:58 to go in the contest. The Rattlers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Tigers still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-55 win.
