JSU rolls past Tougaloo in Baseball Home-Opener

JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State University Tigers combined for a 23-to-3 run advantage over Tougaloo College in their baseball home debut at Braddy Field on Tuesday, picking up wins of 11-1 and 12-2 against their crosstown foes and registering their fourth straight win of the 2024 season.
 
With the doubleheader wins, the Tigers improved to 4-1, while Tougaloo dropped to 2-4.
 
How it Happened:
Game 1: JSU 11, Tougaloo 1
The initial game of the two-game series saw Jackson State go 11-for-27 with 11 runs scored and 11 runs batted in. Right fielder Rodney Hibler had a banner performance, going 2-for-4, with his hits coming in the form of a double and a triple. He collected four RBIs in the process and scored a run himself.
 
First baseman Miles Thomas, left fielder Joseph Eichelberger, and center fielder Jordan McCladdie each went 1-for-3, with Thomas driving in three runs.
 
Stevins Spurgeon picked up the win, pitching five complete innings while allowing three hits and one earned run.
 
Game 2: JSU 12, Tougaloo 2
 
The nightcap matchup against Tougaloo saw the Tigers go 9-for-26 with 12 runs scored, including three home runs.
 
First baseman Jaelen Williams blasted homers in the third and sixth innings, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
        
Lenny Montesano had the other home run for the Tigers, that one being a one-run homer in the first inning. The third baseman went 1-for-2 in the contest with a pair of RBIs and one run scored.
        
Additionally, Eichelberger went 3-for-4, driving in four runs.
        
Brandon Haston secured the win, allowing no runs and just 1 hit and striking out five batters.
 
Up Next for the Tigers
The Tigers will play a three-game non-conference series against rival Mississippi Valley State University on Friday-Sunday. JSU will host the Delta Devils on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 6 p.m., with a 3 p.m. date at MVSU on Saturday.
