Tigers Fall in OT to Alcorn State Despite Second Half Rally

LORMAN, MS --The Jackson State men's basketball team went into halftime trailing Alcorn State 36-34, rallied from the deficit to tie the game at 65-65 and force overtime but fell to the Braves 87-73 on the road Saturday at the Davey L. Whitney Complex.

The Tigers (12-15, 8-6 SWAC) had four players score in double figures, led by Keionte Cornelius, who had 19 points and two steals. Ken Evans tacked on 18 points and six rebounds, and Jordan O'Neal chipped in as well with 17 points and two steals. Coltie Young added 11 points with five rebounds and four assists. 

The Jackson State offense was impressive from three-point range, making eight threes on 21 attempts. Cornelius hit three treys for the Tigers in the contest.

How It Happened

After falling behind 13-4, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run with 13:05 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 13-12. Alcorn State (10-17, 9-5 SWAC) answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Tigers down 36-34 entering halftime.

Alcorn State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 39-34 advantage before Jackson State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Evans' layup, to seize a 43-39 lead with 15:34 to go in the contest. The Braves fought back to even things up at 65-65 and sent the game to overtime.

Alcorn State then took control in overtime and won 87-73.

  • Jackson State rallied from a two-point 36-34 halftime deficit to force overtime before ultimately coming up short.
