Jackson State falls short in 80-70 loss to Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas --The Jackson State men's basketball team fell short in an 80-70 loss to the Texas Southern Tigers on the road Saturday at the Health & Physical Education Arena.

The Tigers (12-16, 8-7 SWAC) had three players score in double figures, led by Ken Evans, who had 19 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Keionte Cornelius tacked on 13 points, and Coltie Young chipped in as well with 10 points and two steals.

Jackson State forced 13 Texas Southern turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Saturday's game. The Tigers turned those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Keiveon Hunt's three steals led the way for Jackson State.


How It Happened

After falling behind 19-14, Jackson State went on an 8-0 run with 9:51 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Evans, to take a 22-19 lead. The Tigers lost some of that lead but still entered halftime with a 33-32 advantage. Jackson State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 33 total points.

Texas Southern took a 52-51 lead before Jackson State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Zeke Cook's jumper, to seize a 58-52 lead with 10:21 to go in the contest. Texas Southern re-asserted control, outscoring the Tigers 28-12 the rest of the way to hand Jackson State the 80-70 loss. Jackson State got out on the break in the period, scoring 10 fast break points.
