JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State softball team overcame a seven-run deficit and tied the game at seven in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings against Texas A&M Corpus Christi to open day two of the River City Classic at the JSU Softball Field Saturday morning. The Tigers topped the Islanders 9-8 in nine innings.
Kelley Bickers (1-0) secured the win in the circle for Jackson State. Bickers pitched four innings while allowing four hits, two runs and one error.
Victoria Salazar pitched three innings and
Sofia Gonzalez pitched two innings.
How It Happened
- Jackson State (2-0) fell behind 3-0 after the first inning as Texas A&M CC closed out the bottom of the first with three runs, three hits and three left on base.
- The Islanders scored again in the top of the second and took a 6-0 lead in the third inning that held until the top of the seventh.
- Texas A&M CC scored one run in the top of the seventh inning before Jackson State finally answered back.
- Meah Almaraz led off for JSU with a single to shortstop to open the bottom of the seventh.
- Almaraz then advanced to third as Jace Jackson reached on a fielder's choice.Â
- Another Islanders' fielder's choice allowed Almaraz to score, putting JSU on the board, 7-1.
- With bases loaded and a new pitcher in the game for TAMUCC, Samiyyah Huckabee grounded out to the shortstop, scoring another run and putting runners on second and third.
- Madison Perry singled to right field for an RBI, making the score 7-3.
- Back-to-back walks for the Tigers brought in two more runs.
- Jackson's infield single scored two more to tie the score at seven at the end of seven innings.
- The Islanders came back to score on a double to left center, taking a one-run advantage 8-7 heading into the bottoom of the ninth.
- Ka'Liyah Gipson singled to center field to score Huckabee as the Tigers knotted it at eight.
- JSU walked off with an infield single from Almaraz that brought Gipson home to end the game.
