JACKSON, Miss.| Miya Crump shines once again leading the JSU offense with 19 points while tacking on six rebounds and one steal as the Jackson State women's basketball team hit 8-of-20 attempts from beyond the arc, shooting 40 percent from deep in a 71-63 victory over the Grambling State at home Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers had two other players score in double figures as Ti'lan Boler tacked on 14 points and six rebounds and Andriana Avent chipped in as well with 10 points from the bench.
The Jackson State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making eight threes on 20 attempts. Avent was the most prolific shooter for the Tigers, draining three treys in the contest.
Jackson State did a great job disrupting Grambling shots in the contest, coming away with nine blocks. Angel Jackson's six rejections led the way individually for the Tigers.
How It Happened
- After falling behind 14-13, Jackson State (13-6, 8-0 SWAC) went on a 5-0 run with 42 seconds left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Ti'Ian Boler, to take an 18-14 lead.
- The Tigers lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-17 advantage.
- Jackson State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 9:21 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Boler, to increase its lead to 25-17.
- The Tigers cut into that lead, but the Tigers still enjoyed a 37-34 advantage heading into halftime.
- JSU forced six Grambling State turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.
- Jackson State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Laila Walker, to expand its lead further to 52-45 with 41 seconds to go in the third.
- Before the conclusion of the third period, GSU had cut into that lead somewhat, but Jackson State still entered the fourth quarter with a 52-47 edge.
- JSU knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 15 total points.
- Jackson State kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Jackson's layup, to grow the lead to 61-50 with 7:10 to go in the contest.
- Grambling State narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but JSU still cruised the rest of the way for the 71-63 win.
- Jackson State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring nine of its 19 total points.
Inside the Numbers
- Jackson State shot 75 percent (15-for-20) from the free throw line and 24-for-54 (44.4 percent) from the field.
- JSU finished with 26 points in the paint, 18 bench points, 10 points off of 14 GSU turnovers, eight fast break points and six second chance points.
- Grambling State 36.5 percent (23-for-63) from the field and 12-for-15 (80 percent) from the free throw line.
- GSU finished with 33 bench points, 26 points in the paint, 12 points off of 19 JSU turnovers, seven fast break points and seven second chance points.
