JACKSON, Miss. -- Junior Joseph Eichelberger recorded four RBIs to help power the Jackson State Tigers past the Grambling Tigers 11-1 on Tuesday night at Bob Braddy Field on the campus of Jackson State University.
Junior Stevins Spurgeon Jr. (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Jackson State (13-4). The left-hander went two shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing two walks and striking out three. Senior Garrett VanDeventer also made an impact on the mound for the Tigers, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
Eichelberger went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, in addition to his four RBIs, for the Tigers. Senior Davione Hull also furnished a noteworthy performance, going 3-for-4 with a double. Junior Sebastian Cabeza also chipped in for Jackson State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tigers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Hull came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.
The Grambling Tigers failed to push any runs across before the Tigers' offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. A two-run single by Cabeza, which increased the Tigers' lead to 5-0, was the highlight of the Jackson State offense's explosion for four runs.
Jackson State kept Grambling without a run before building their lead to 7-0 the following inning. The Tigers scored twice, with one run coming across on Eichelberger's single.
The Grambling Tigers gained ground, closing the gap to 7-1 until Jackson State added some insurance in the seventh. Eichelberger crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Tigers, bringing the Jackson State advantage to 8-1.
The Tigers held Grambling without a run before expanding their lead to 11-1 the following inning. With the help of a two-run single from Cabeza, Jackson State scored three runs in the frame. The score remained 11-1 for the rest of the game as the Tigers coasted to the win.
