Hull and Tate Shine in Tigers' win over Alabama State

GAME 1 | Jackson State 14, Alabama State 10

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Freshman Robert Tate Jr. and senior Davione Hull racked up three hits to help propel the Jackson State Tigers past the Alabama State Hornets 14-10 on Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on the campus of Alabama State University.

Freshman Shemar Harris (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Jackson State (14-4, 1-0 SWAC). The right-hander went 1.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit.

In addition to his three hits, Hull had a double and an RBI to lead the Tigers. Tate Jr. added a walk and two RBIs to his three-hit performance as well. Senior Rodney Hibler Jr. also chipped in for Jackson State, putting together two hits in six trips to the plate while adding two doubles and an RBI.


HOW IT HAPPENED

The Tigers scored in seven innings on their way to the win. After holding the lead two different times earlier in the game, Jackson State broke a 7-7 tie and took the lead for good at 8-7 in the sixth inning. The big hits for the Tigers in the inning were a two-run single off the bat of junior Myles White and a two-run double from senior Hasan Standifer.


GAME NOTES

  • Jackson State got a three-hit game from both Hull and Tate Jr.
  • Hibler Jr., who had two extra base hits in the game, led the Tigers' power output.
  • Jackson State's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed four runs across.
  • Jackson State took the lead at 5-4 in the top half of the third and never lost that advantage.
  • Four Tigers had multiple hits in the ballgame.
  • The Tigers had a total of 15 hits.
  • Jackson State went 7-for-21 (.333) with runners in scoring position.

  • Tate Jr. led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
  • Alabama State was led offensively by senior Ali LaPread, who went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs.
