JACKSON, Miss -- Garrett VanDeventer recorded seven strikeouts in eight innings of work in the Jackson State Tigers' 4-3 win over the Alcorn State Braves on Saturday.

In addition to his seven strikeouts, VanDeventer (2-1) went eight innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on four hits and walking two for Jackson State (7-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Tigers were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. McCladdie came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State and get them on the board.

The Braves then scored one run to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Tigers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Edward Gregory came across to score the lone run of the inning for Jackson State, which brought the score level at 2-2.

That 2-2 tie turned into a 4-2 Jackson State lead in the fifth. The Tigers picked up two runs when a single from Cabeza scored Hibler and Lenny Montesano. Alcorn State put one run on the scoreboard before the game ended, but Jackson State still held on for the 4-3 win.
