ITTA BENA, Miss. | Jackson State swept a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) doubleheader from Mississippi Valley State on Saturday, winning game one 15-6 before winning 9-0 in the nightcap.
Jackson State (20-9, 8-3 SWAC) pounded out 15 hits in the first game of the day with six players picking up multiple hits, led by
Mari Stephens who finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Ka'Liyah Gipson finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while
Jace Jackson finished with 2-for-4 with five RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Meah Almaraz,
Gabrielle Willis, and
Julie Lopez each picked up a pair of hits.
Sofia Gonzalez (3-4) picked up the win working 5.0 innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on four hits with four strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Jackson paced a 10-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored, while Stephens finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.
Victoria Salazar (10-4) picked up the win in relief, working the final 4.0 innings allowing just three hits and striking out five.
How It Happened (Game 1)
- (T1) Jackson drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly in foul territory to score Stephens, Jackson State 1-0.
- (B1) Aulora Edwards drove in a run with a bunt single before Ashanti Stephens was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. MyKaila Fleming reached on an infield error to bring in another run before the Devilettes used a single by Karis Robinson, a bases-loaded walk to Hillary Victor, and a sacrifice fly by Jade Smith, Mississippi Valley State 6-1.
- (T2) Lopez doubled to left driving in a run before Madison Perry recorded a sacrifice fly to cut the lead in half, Mississippi Valley State 6-3.
- (T3) Beija Allen singled to left to drive in a run, Mississippi Valley State 6-4.
- (T5) Jackson doubled to center driving in a pair of runs before Almarez doubled to left to give Jackson State the lead. The inning continued with a triple by Willis, a single from Lopez and a single from Samiyyah Huckabee extended the lead. The lead continued to grow with a double to center from Stephens, an error off the bat of Gipson, a two-run home run by Jackson, and another Mississippi Valley State error, Jackson State 15-6.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- (T1) Jackson singled to center to drive in Stephens, Jackson State 1-0.
- (T2) Lopez and Willis pulled off a double steal with Willis scoring on a throwing error before Jalia Hubbard drove in a run with an RBI groundout, Jackson State 3-0.
- (T3) Willis singled to center to drive in another run, Jackson State 4-0.
- (T5) Jackson singled to center to drive in a run, Jackson State 5-0.
- (T6) Kristina Carlson drove in a run with a single to center before Stephens doubled to left to push the lead to seven. The Tigers added two more runs on a Jackson single and an Almarez single, Jackson State 9-0.
