Softball Rallies from Late Tie for 8-4 Win Over BCU

JACKSON, Miss. --The Jackson State Tigers broke through after a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning to take down the Bethune-Cookman 8-4 Friday afternoon at the JSU Softball Field.

Victoria Salazar (13-7) got the win for Jackson State (21-11, 9-3 SWAC ). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, all of them earned, on 10 hits, allowing three walks and striking out one.

In the batter's box, the Tigers were paced by Gabrielle Willis, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a double, a triple and an RBI. Jace Jackson put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Beija Allen also chipped in for Jackson State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding two doubles.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 2-0, the Tigers first put runs on the board in the second inning.
  • Jackson State got an RBI single from junior Julie Lopez, scoring Allen from third base.
  • The Tigers kept the deficit at 2-1 before tying the score in the fourth.
  • JSU scored a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Willis, scoring Allen, which brought the score level at 2-2.
  • BCU busted up the tie and grabbed a 3-2 lead moving into the fifth, when Jackson State tied the game at three.
  • The Tigers scored five runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run off the bat of sophomore Madison Perry, bringing the score to 8-4 in favor of Jackson State.
  • The score remained 8-4 for the rest of the game, as the Tigers coasted to the win.
