BATON ROUGE, La.| The Jackson State Tigers softball team opened play in the 2024 NCAA Softball Tournament against LSU Friday afternoon at Tiger Park. JSU wasn't able to record a run against LSU's pitcher Raelin Chaffin and was shut out 5-0.
Victoria Salazar got the ball to start in the circle for Jackson State and pitched all seven innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jackson State had one runner on in the first inning as Ka'Liyah Gipson was walked during her at bat.
- The inning ended in a double play for LSU when Meah Almaraz struck out and Gipson was caught stealing.
- LSU scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning on a single down the right field lie from Raeleen Gutierrez.
- LSU scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to widen the gap to a 3-0 lead.
- Jackson State got a hit from Gabrielle Willis in the top of the fifth inning, but three outs followed Willis at bat for the Tigers.
- Samiyyah Huckabee led off the top of the sixth with a single to left field.
- JSU was unable to capitalize off the hit as the next two batters registered outs.
- LSU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and Jackson State was unable to recover, falling to the home team 5-0.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Jackson State pitchers faced 28 LSU hitters in the game, allowing 12 ground balls and five fly balls.
- Samiyyah Huckabee led the Tigers at the plate, going 1-for-1.
- LSU was led offensively by senior Karli Petty, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
- Chaffin led the LSU Tigers pitching staff, throwing seven shutout innings.
