Soccer's Season Opener Ends in a Draw

JACKSON, Miss.| The Jackson State soccer team opened its season at home Thursday afternoon at the JSU Soccer Field against Southern Illinois. The match ended in a 2-2 tie. Kendly Terrell and Karime Antonio-Lopez led the Tigers' offense scoring a pair of goals each in the match.
 
Jackson State's defense was strong in the first ten minutes of the match as Jordan Hamilton registered two saves in that time frame. Southern Illinois got on the board first with a goal from McKensey Bunch and an assist off the corner kick from Ashlyn Henrie at 10:48.
 
Antonio-Lopez took her shot at the goal at the 15:05 mark, but Fabiana Solano came up with the save. At 39 minutes, Terrell scored JSU's first goal off a free kick near the box to even the score at one going into the half.
 
The Tigers opened the second half of the match shot from Antonio-Lopez at 47:23, but Solano recorded another save at the 47:23 mark. With ten minutes left in the match, the Salukis Bunch scored again off a handball call against Jackson State that resulted in a free kick for SIU. The Salukis jumped ahead to a 2-1 lead at the 80:36 mark. A little under a minute later at 81:33, Jackson State answered tying the match at two with a goal from Antonio-Lopez. The score held until the end of regulation.
 
Kalia Uehara took a shot around the 84-minute mark in an attempt to break the game open, but Solano picked up another save. The Salukis tried for the go-ahead at 85:42 and Hamilton punched out another save to keep the Tigers in it. The held until the end of regulation resulting in a tie.
 
Jackson State took 11 shots and five on goal while SIU took 13 shots and eight on goal. Hamilton registered six saves in the match.
 
Up Next
The Tigers will travel to Lake Charles, La. to take on McNeese State Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
